Sheets, Brewers square off with Cards

Baseball Betting Lines

05/10/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ben Sheets will try to keep his perfect record intact this evening, when he leads the Milwaukee Brewers in the second installment of a four-game series versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.

Sheets is 4-0 with a 2.29 earned run average in six starts this season, and last pitched on May 4 at Houston. Sheets didn't factor in the outcome of an 8-6 loss, yielding four runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

The right-hander hasn't fared too well against the Cardinals in his career as Sheets owns a 5-14 mark with a 4.30 earned run average in 23 career starts.

Milwaukee put the brakes on a season-high six-game losing streak with Friday's 4-3 victory over the Cardinals in the opener of this series. Rickie Weeks hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Brewers, who got two hits each from Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Weeks.

Brian Shouse pitched a perfect ninth for the win, while starter Manny Parra lasted five innings and surrendered three runs on three hits in the no decision. Milwaukee is 1-0 on a seven-game homestand versus the Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The NL Central-leading Cardinals are one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the division, and have lost three in a row after a three-game winning streak. In Friday's one-run loss at Miller Park, Albert Pujols had two hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and Rick Ankiel added two hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which is 2-3 on an eight-game road trip.

St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen took the loss after allowing Weeks' game- winning hit in the ninth inning. Starter Todd Wellemeyer tossed six innings and gave up two runs, both unearned, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Cardinals hurler Joel Pineiro will try to rebound from his worst outing of the season when he takes the ball tonight.

Pineiro, who is 2-2 with a 4.33 ERA in five starts this season, posted a no decision in a 6-5 win at Colorado on May 5. He was reached for four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in three innings of work.

The right-hander is still unbeaten over his last three trips to the hill (2-0), and defeated the Brewers in his only appearance against them on August 15 last season at Miller Park. Pineiro lasted seven innings and allowed just a pair of runs in an 8-3 triumph.

The 2008 season series between St. Louis and Milwaukee is tied at a game apiece. The Cardinals, though, are 31-22 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
